Two needle-based methods, different treatment jobs
For indented acne-scar texture, microneedling is the more established starting point to explore. PRP Mesotherapy offers a different, own-plasma approach to skin quality, with encouraging but mixed facial research for texture and early lines. The defining difference is the treatment action: controlled needling itself, or prepared plasma delivered into the skin by injection. Choose around the change you want, rather than the more impressive-sounding name.
Microneedling uses small punctures to stimulate a repair response that includes collagen production. The needling is central to the method. Professional treatment is used for concerns including acne-scar appearance, uneven texture and fine lines, as the American Academy of Dermatology’s microneedling guide (external) explains.
PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma, prepared from a sample of your own blood. In Skin51’s PRP Mesotherapy service, that preparation is injected into the skin using mesotherapy techniques. PRP describes the material; mesotherapy describes the delivery approach. Together, they name one skin-focused service.
That gives you two clear directions to explore at Skin51: Microneedling for a focused texture-and-scar discussion, and PRP Mesotherapy for a plasma-based skin-quality plan. Our team connects the method with your priorities and explains the care involved.
Compare the goal before the treatment name
| Your main priority | Microneedling | Injected PRP Mesotherapy |
|---|---|---|
| Indented acne scars | A clearer scar-focused starting point. Professional needling has direct acne-scar evidence and an established place in dermatologists’ treatment options. The pattern of scarring still matters. | A separate plasma discussion. Injected PRP has been studied for scars, but findings from PRP-plus-needling studies cannot establish that injections alone replace scar-directed needling. |
| Rough texture and early lines | A recognised professional use. The repair response is relevant to smoother-looking texture and less noticeable fine lines. | A worthwhile skin-quality question. A small facial trial found better participant-rated texture and wrinkles after PRP than saline, while dermatologist ratings did not show a significant difference. |
| Flat post-acne marks or uneven colour | Name the colour concern first. Needling is discussed for uneven tone, but a flat mark is a different goal from an indentation. | Do not borrow the texture finding. The same facial PRP trial did not establish a significant advantage in dermatologist-rated pigmentation. Compare a tone-focused plan rather than choose by the acronym. |
“Better skin” is an understandable wish, but it is too broad to make this choice. An uneven surface, early lines and flat dark marks deserve different comparisons.

For scar texture, the reason to begin with microneedling is its direct scar-treatment role—not proof that it beats injected PRP in every head-to-head situation. In a small randomized needling trial (external), acne-scar appearance improved over time after needling. The AAD’s acne-scar guidance (external) also makes scar type central to choosing treatment. One method will not suit every scar pattern.
For texture and early lines, PRP’s own-plasma method gives you something specific to consider. In the 2018 facial PRP trial (external), participants preferred the PRP-treated cheek for texture and wrinkles at six months, but the masked dermatologists’ photographic ratings did not establish a significant advantage. This supports a measured skin-quality discussion; it does not establish PRP as the superior stand-alone treatment.
If colour is what bothers you most, broaden the comparison. Our Microneedling vs Chemical Peels guide explains a separate method-and-goal choice for marks and texture. You do not need to force every concern into a Microneedling-versus-PRP decision.
What “microneedling with PRP” means
This is a third description: a combination, rather than another name for either stand-alone service. PRP may be applied to needled skin or used by injection alongside needling; the exact study method matters.
A small acne-scar study by Ismail and colleagues (external) compared a combination with needling alone in one group and with injected PRP alone in another. It did not directly randomize the two stand-alone treatments against each other. In a different 2024 facial-aging trial (external), both sides received microneedling after PRP or saline injections, and PRP did not add a detectable benefit. Those designs answer questions about combinations; they cannot be converted into a universal stand-alone ranking or an assumed Skin51 package.
Keep one useful habit: when you hear a combined-treatment result, check what was actually combined and for which goal.
Compare the experience as well as the goal
Microneedling is a professional skin-needling experience. PRP Mesotherapy adds a blood sample and plasma preparation before injection-based delivery. That practical difference matters if the blood-draw aspect is an important preference for you. It does not make one treatment more advanced or more effective by default.
Recovery also deserves a place in the comparison. The AAD describes temporary colour change, discomfort and swelling after microneedling, usually settling over a few days to a week. Its PRP overview (external) describes pain, bruising and swelling that tend to settle over a few days. These are general descriptions from different treatment contexts, not a controlled comparison proving that one has shorter downtime. Leave room for visible changes and follow the instructions for your actual plan.
At Skin51, the starting course descriptions are three to six Microneedling visits and three to four PRP Mesotherapy visits, each spaced three to four weeks apart. Your goal and treatment discussion shape the individual plan. Fewer listed visits do not prove a quicker result or better value, and completing a course does not guarantee a particular change.
